Servants Wanted!

In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.

A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well. Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus. (1 Timothy 3:8-13)

Paul has just finished describing what “overseers” are to be like. Those words seem to be the closest words in the Bible for what we call a “pastor” today. God through Paul laid out specific qualifications for what the overseers of his churches are to be like.

So, pastors are supposed to do everything, right? It’s easy for church members to think that way. The pastor is here to do everything that’s needed for the church, right?

Wrong! While a pastor is expected to faithfully dedicate himself to leading God’s people, he can’t and he shouldn’t carry out the work of God’s church all by himself. Instead, the Bible encourages other people to serve as “deacons.” The word “deacon” simply means “servant.” God says: “Servants wanted!”

What are these “deacons” or “servants” to be like? Just like pastors, they are to show strong Christian character: Worthy of respect. Not addicted to alcohol. Trustworthy. Faithful. Imagine what could be accomplished in a Christian church if many servants like that eagerly served with their pastor!

There are two things these “deacons” or “servants” aren’t told to do. There is no mention of “teaching.” That’s an ability that pastors need to have (see 1 Timothy 3:2). There is also no mention of leading the whole congregation. Instead, these deacons—including some women—serve Christ by using their many different gifts in many different ways in support of their pastors in their congregations.

Just like many businesses post “Help Wanted” signs, every Christian church could put a “Servants Wanted” sign over its front door. What could you do to serve Christ and others at your church? Ask your pastor for ways to help. Every church is blessed when Christians step up to serve. Servants wanted!

Dear Jesus, the work of your church isn’t to be carried out by just a few pastors. There are so many ways God’s people can serve you and others. Raise up many willing servants in your churches. Amen.

Pastor Nathan
