Children of God

We like to think we have lots of choices in life, but there is one thing we most certainly don’t get to choose: Our father. No son or daughter gets to choose his or her father. Our fathers choose us.
For some of us, that’s worked out great. For you, Father’s Day is something you look forward to—celebrating dad! For some of us, it’s the opposite. Father’s Day just means more heartbreak and pain.
Unless you remember your real Father—your heavenly Father. “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him” (1 John 3:1). See the exclamation points in that verse? This is good news. Great news! In his great love for us, God calls us the children of God.
Because God chose you. When we were dead in our sins, God our Father chose to give us new life through baptism. If you’ve been baptized, you are the child of God! When we were powerless to save ourselves, Jesus died on the cross for us. If you believe in Jesus, you are the child of God!
No matter how your Father’s Day went, rejoice that you are the child of God. Chosen. Loved. Cherished. You! “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
