Wrestling with Your Thoughts

Do you ever wrestle with your thoughts? Sadly, that’s one of the worst wrestling matches to find yourself in. Your thoughts say, “You can’t do anything right!” You try to push back, “I’m trying my hardest!” But your thoughts are so powerful, “Nobody cares about you. You don’t matter….” Do you ever wrestle with your thoughts? It’s a wrestling match that seems impossible to win.

You’re not alone. 3,000 years ago, King David wrote in the Bible, “How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart?” (Psalm 13:2). Sound familiar? Wrestling with your thoughts is an exhausting struggle.

But King David found a solution. In fact, he found a way to win: “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation” (Psalm 13:5). Where did the victory come from? Not from David. From God! Peace and confidence in his life came from trusting in God’s unfailing love for him.

When your thoughts attack you, you have a Defender—Jesus! When your thoughts say, “No one could forgive you,” Jesus says, “My blood washed your sins away!” (see 1 John 1:7). When your thoughts say, “You are all alone,” Jesus says, “Surely I am with you always!” (see Matthew 28:20). When your thoughts say, “Nobody cares about you,” Jesus says, “Nothing can separate you from my love” (see Romans 8:37-39).

When you find yourself wrestling with your thoughts, trust in God’s unfailing love.
