Make God's Name Great

“I want to make a name for myself.” Have you ever said that? Have you ever thought that? Our hearts are set on wanting to be great. To be known. “I want to make a name for myself!”

Watch out! Long ago, God told the people on earth to spread out and fill up the world. Do you know what they said? “No!” Instead, they decided to stay in one place and build a big city with a great tower in the middle of it. Here’s why: “So that we may make a name for ourselves” (Genesis 11:4).

Do you think God was pleased with their disobedience and pride? Of course not! God forced those proud people to abandon their Tower of Babel and scatter throughout the world.

You don’t need to make a name for yourself. Know why? Jesus gives you names that are so much better than anything you could come up with for yourself. Like, “Christian.” And, “Child of God.” And, “Loved.” The best names in the world have nothing to do with what you’ve done. The best names come from what Jesus has made you. Through Jesus’ death on the cross, through Baptism, you are the chosen, loved child of God!

What a great God we have! Don’t waste your life trying to make a name for yourself. Instead, spend each day making God’s name great. When you live for God and his glory, everything else will fall into place.
