The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:15-17)
I bet this has happened to you: Life’s not going well. In fact, it seems like your life is falling apart. You try to hide the anxiety inside. You try to put on a happy face, but it’s hard. Finally, you find the courage to talk to someone. You take a deep breath and spill it all out, all the problems and the sadness and the pain. The person kindly listens for a while and then says, “It’s okay. Just hang in there!” You thank them for their advice, grit your teeth, and head back to face the world with “just hang in there!” on your mind.
And you realize it doesn’t help one bit. “Just hang in there? I can’t! Can’t you see that? I can’t hang in there! I can’t hang onto anything. Who can actually help me? Who can actually do something?”
There is Someone who will never tell you, “Just hang in there.” Know who it is? Jesus. Know what Jesus says? “I’m holding on to you!” Life isn’t about you hanging in there. Life is about Jesus holding on to you.
There is nobody better. There is no one more powerful. Jesus is “the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” If you’re the “image of the invisible God,” do you know what you are? God! Jesus is God! It shows: “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.” Can you hear the power? Can you hear the control? It’s all in the hands of Jesus!
Including you. “In him all things hold together.” Jesus is holding together all things. That means Jesus is holding you. Jesus is holding your life. The One who created all things and died for all people is holding your life together. Don’t just hand in there. Rest in Jesus’ arms. Know that he’s holding on to you!
Dear Jesus, if I could see your hands, I would see the marks where the nails were. Your hands that hold me are the same hands that died for me. In the hurt, in the pain, hold my life together. Amen.
