A Purse with Holes

You can never have enough money. Have you noticed that? No matter what you have, there are always things you don’t have. No matter what you buy, there’s always something more.
It’s so easy to make life a pursuit of money and possessions. “If I could just have…” “If we could just afford…” How often do those thoughts flash through your mind? Who’s missing? God!
God constantly warns us against putting our trust in money. Money never satisfies. Instead, “You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” (Haggai 1:6). Do you ever feel like your purse—or wallet or bank account—has a hole in it?
When you put your hope in money, God will find all sorts of ways for your money run out. When you spend your time scheming or stealing or prioritizing money, God will put holes in your purse—like car repairs or market crashes—to take that money away.
But when you put your hope in God, God will find all sorts of ways to provide for you unexpectedly. Peace doesn’t come from what you have. Peace comes from recognizing that Jesus has given you all that you need—from forgiveness to food.
Put your trust in Jesus. He’s so much better than a purse with holes!
