The Amen

“Amen.” I bet you say that at the end of your prayers. I do. Do you know what it means? “Amen” seems to mean, “The End”, doesn’t it? When we finish, we say, “Amen. The End!”

But that’s not what the word “Amen” means. It’s a Hebrew word that strongly affirms what has just been said. If you say something and then say “Amen,” you’re saying, “Let it be so!” or “This is true!” That’s saying a lot more than “The End,” don’t you think?

“Amen” was one of Jesus’ favorite words. When he taught, Jesus would often begin important statements with the word “Amen” or even a double “Amen, amen.” Our Bibles often translate those words as “truly” or “very truly.” Here’s an example: “Very truly [Amen, amen] I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit” (John 3:5).

When we end a prayer with “Amen,” we are confidently saying, “This is true! God will do what’s best!”

How can we say that? How can we be so confident? All because of Jesus. In fact, the Bible says that Jesus is the Amen! “These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation” (Revelation 3:14). What a title for Jesus! Jesus is truth. Jesus is certainty. Jesus rules all.

So don’t end your prayers with “The End.” End them with a firm “Amen!” because your confidence is in Jesus.
