Is it really wrong to covet? Wouldn’t life be better if you just had one more thing? What’s so bad about wanting other people’s stuff? God knows the danger. Read 1 Kings 21. Wealthy and wicked King Ahab wanted one more thing—a vineyard that belonged to a righteous man named Naboth. When Naboth refused to part with his God-given inheritance, Ahab’s coveting led to lying and deceiving and the bloody murder of Naboth. Yet, even after he got Naboth’s vineyard, do you think Ahab was content? No way. There’s always that one more thing… That’s why God commands, “You shall not covet…” (Exodus 20:17).
What one more thing do you think you need to be content? What one more thing do you think would make you truly happy? What sins are you falling into right now in your desire to get what you most desire? I bet I know what will happen when you get it: You’ll need one more thing…
Contentment doesn’t come from what you own. King Ahab with all of his power and palaces is proof of that! Contentment comes from knowing Jesus as your Savior. From trusting in God’s promise of eternal life in heaven. From the grace of seeing how every blessing in life is a gift from our loving Father’s hand. You don’t need one more thing. You have Jesus! May God protect our hearts from coveting.
