“They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.” (2 Timothy 3:6-9)
Did you know that there were door-to-door preachers in Bible times? People who claimed to be religious teachers would go from house to house, trying to share their message and get converts for their religion. Sound familiar? The same thing happens today, especially with false teachers like Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons who reject the Bible’s teachings. These false preachers look for gullible people who are loaded down with the guilt of their sins. Watch out for door-to-door preachers!
In fact, with the internet, there are way more preachers than ever before. Instead of just door-to-door preachers, today there are also screen-to-screen preachers, hoping to gain an audience by popping up on your phone or computer screen. They try to catch you at your weakest moments. They seek to take advantage of your feelings of guilt and shame. Watch out for screen-to-screen preachers!
You don’t have to listen to every person who wants to share their message with you. You don’t have to believe everything you hear. God wants you to be very careful about whom you listen to.
It’s easy to always learn but never come to a knowledge of the truth. So many preachers teach and teach, but never get to the truth of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ our Savior. So many preachers prey on your guilt, but never share the forgiveness that’s found in Jesus and his cross. So many preachers are eager for your attention and money, but they don’t care about your soul.
Know this: Those false preachers won’t get very far. One day, their folly will be clear to everyone.
Instead of bouncing from one preacher to another on a screen, find a pastor who preaches the truth of God’s grace in Jesus. Watch out for door-to-door preachers. Listen to a pastor who cares for your soul.
Dear Jesus, so many false preachers go around in your name. Give me discernment to know the truth of your Word, and provide me with a faithful pastor who cares for my soul and points me to you. Amen.
