Victory!

This past fall, our local high school football team set a state record by winning its 58th consecutive game. To celebrate that milestone, they blasted the song, “All I do is win, win, win, no matter what…” over the loudspeakers after every touchdown in their home stadium. What a thrill! “All I do is win, win, win, no matter what!”

Except I don’t. I often don’t feel like a winner at all. Do you? In fact, it often seems like all I do is lose, lose, lose no matter what. I don’t do what I know I should do, and I feel guilty about it. I think and do things that I know I should never think and do, and I feel guilty about it. Win? Not me.

Until Easter. Do you realize what happened on Easter? It’s the day of Jesus’ victory. Jesus defeated sin when he died for our sins on the cross. He defeated death when he rose from the dead. Listen to what Jesus does with his victory: “Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57).

Did you catch it? God gives you Jesus’ victory! Your sin? Forgiven at the cross! Death? You will rise to live in heaven. I know it looks like the game of life is still in progress, but there’s no doubt about the outcome: Jesus won. Victory! Because of Easter, all we do is win, win, win, no matter what, through our Lord Jesus Christ!
