Treasures in Heaven

Writer: Pastor Nathan NassPastor Nathan Nass

Have you gotten some good deals? We have! As Cyber Week ends, we’ve been bombarded with sale after sale, chance after chance to get good deals on just about everything. Toys. TVs. Tablets… So it was good for me to read these words from Jesus: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19). Huh. Isn’t it amazing — and sad! — how much we love stuff? We think things will make us happy. We accumulate more and more stuff. How long will it last? It’s embarrassing how excited I can get about treasures on earth.

Because we already have something way better. Jesus continues: “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:20-21). Whether you bought anything this week or not, you already have treasure. Treasure in heaven! God’s forgiveness and love. A home in heaven. A place in God’s family. How long will that last? Forever! Know how much you have to pay? Nothing. It’s free. Talk about a Cyber Week deal! Heaven is God’s gift through faith in Jesus. As you look around at all the treasures you could buy on earth, rejoice that you already have treasures in heaven!
