The LORD Watches over the Foreigner

Have you seen the pictures lately from the U.S. border? Bodies floating in the Rio Grande River. People packed into tent cities or under bridges. Parents holding children with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Regardless of your political views, doesn’t your heart go out to them? There are so many people in the world whom no one seems to care about. There are so many people who suffer in silence, who are treated more like problems than like human beings. Maybe that’s how you feel. Unwanted. Unneeded. A foreigner. Does anybody care?

Yes! God does. “The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.” God loves and cares for those whom everyone else forgets—maybe especially for those whom everyone else forgets. Corrie Ten Boom—a Christian who survived the Holocaust—liked to say that there is “no pit so deep that God is not deeper still.” In fact, Jesus made himself the lowest person in the world by dying on the cross for everyone so that he could raise us up as the forgiven people of God. “The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow…” How can we?
