The Lord Knows Those Who Are His

Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: ‘The Lord knows those who are his,’ and ‘Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.’” (2 Timothy 2:19)

How are we going to make it? How are we going to have faith in Jesus until the last breath of our lives? People often say that life is short, but when you really think about it, life is actually long. Most people live to be 70 or 80 years old. 70 or 80 years is a long time! The devil has countless opportunities to tempt us to sin. False teachers and false teachings strive to deceive us day after day, year after year. How are we going to make it so long? How are we going to have faith in Jesus until the very end?

Only by God’s grace. If our faith depended on us, we all would have fallen away from faith long ago. Don’t ever think that it’s your strength or wisdom that keeps you a Christian. That couldn’t be further from the truth! If left on our own, there’s no way we would be able to endure.

But we’re not alone. In a changing world, “God’s solid foundation stands firm.” We have Jesus Christ as our cornerstone and the Word of God as our foundation and the Christian Church to encourage us.

Here’s God’s powerful promise to his people, “The Lord knows those who are his.” What comfort! Sure, the devil constantly attacks the people of God. Yet, “the Lord knows those who are his.” He won’t let the devil snatch you out of his hand. It’s true that temptations constantly surround us. Yet, “the Lord knows those who are his.” Your sins have already all been forgiven by the blood of Jesus. Life is long, and there will be many opportunities for you to fall, yet “the Lord knows who are his.” When you were baptized, God adopted you into his family, and he will see to it that you make it to finish line.

As a blood-bought child of God anchored on his solid foundation, take to heart this encouragement: “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” When temptations come, turn away from them! When the devil tempts, say, “No!”

You’re God’s. There’s nothing better you could ever be. “The Lord knows those who are his.”

Dear Lord God, life on earth is long and hard. There are so many opportunities to fall. Give me strength to turn away from wickedness, and don’t let anyone snatch me out of your hand. Amen.
