The Gift of Sleep

Even the simplest things in life depend on the Lord. Do you realize that?

Here’s an example: Going to sleep. That sounds simple, doesn’t it? You’d think we could handle that on our own. All we have to do is lie down and close our eyes. Done! Until that sleepless night comes. Your mind races. Regrets fill your thoughts. Worries about everything overwhelm you. Does that happen to you? It’s humbling. It’s frightening. Even going to sleep isn’t something we can do on our own.

King David in the Bible had sleepless nights. In fact, there was a night on which he had to flee for his life because his own son Absalom led a revolt against him. Can you imagine that? Yet, as he fled from his son, here’s what he wrote: “I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me” (Psalm 3:5). How could he sleep? By the grace of God. Because the LORD sustained him! How could he wake up safe and sound? By the grace of God. Because the LORD sustained him!

Those regrets that fill your thoughts? Jesus already paid for your sins when he died on the cross. Those worries that make your heart race? Nothing can happen to you apart from God’s good plan for your life. You can lie down and sleep in peace.

Even the simplest things in life depend on the Lord. Isn’t that great? May God give you the gift of sleep.
