The Fruit of the Spirit

We’ve been hearing lots of things we’re not supposed to do. Whether it’s the pandemic or the protests, there have been a lot of “don’ts.” Most of them are good advice: Don’t be unjust. Don’t touch your face. Don’t look down on other people. Don’t… Those are messages we need to hear. But there can’t just be “don’ts”. What should we actually “do”? Don’t we need to hear that too? What will Christians do with their lives? The Bible says: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).

Aren’t those all exactly what we need in our world? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control… Notice where those good “fruits” come from—the Holy Spirit. We can’t create those beautiful, godly attitudes on our own. They don’t come naturally to our hearts. They aren’t qualities that come from winning Facebook arguments. They come from God’s Spirit. The Spirit works through God’s Word. Don’t we all need so much more of Jesus? Because what’s Jesus like? Filled with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control! He forgives what we’ve done and empowers us to do. May your day be filled with the fruit of the Spirit!
