The Coming Apostasy

The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.” (1 Timothy 4:1-2)

Apostasy. Are you familiar with that word? The word “apostasy” means “rejection” or “abandonment.” In Christianity, it’s used to refer to abandoning the truths of God’s Word and saving faith in Jesus.

When the Bible was written, it promised that apostasy was coming. Through the Holy Spirit, Paul wrote that “in later times some will abandon the faith.” Christians needed to be ready for the coming apostasy.

That’s so different from what we expect to happen. By nature, we assume things are going to get better, right? We think that if we do the right things, and if the people around us do the right things, the world will become a better place, won’t it? As Christians, we think that if we just keep sharing God’s Word, our churches will always grow, and more people will believe. Soon we’ll have heaven on earth, right?

This is why we’re constantly surprised at the evil things that happen every day. We’re surprised when people turn away from God. We’re surprised when our culture isn’t interested in church or Jesus Christ.

But that shouldn’t surprise us, at least not if we’re paying attention to God’s Word. The Bible is very clear about the coming apostasy. The devil and his demons are active in our world. They sow their deceptions and lies everywhere to lead people astray. When people hear a lie often enough, it sounds true, and the truth sounds like a lie. Consciences become seared as with a hot iron. Right seems wrong, and wrong seems right, and those who follow Christ are labeled ungodly and wicked…

Do you see that happening? Don’t be surprised. It’s just like Paul predicted. Even Jesus himself said that the gate to heaven is narrow, while the gate to destruction is wide (Matthew 7:13-14).

Dear Christian, don’t be deceived. God’s Word is true. Make it the foundation of your life. Jesus Christ truly died and rose to save you. Don’t let anyone or anything try to take his place. Even if so many people seem to be turning away, God knows you. His Spirit made you his through baptism. Don’t let the coming apostasy surprise you. Instead, cling to God’s truth.

Dear Spirit, long ago you warned about the coming apostasy. It sure seems like it is here. Shield us from all lies and deceptions, and don’t let anyone or anything pull us away from Jesus. Amen.

Pastor Nathan
