Smart as a Worm

Are you as smart as a worm? At my church in Oklahoma, I’ve learned what to expect after a heavy rain. When I walk into the church entryway, it will be filled with earthworms. Big, foot-long Oklahoma night crawlers. I can’t explain it. I have no idea how they get inside. But after every rain, there they are. Somehow, they know where to go to find refuge. They get into church, even when the door is locked.

Are you as smart as a worm? When life’s storms hit, what do you do? I know what I do: I put my head down and pretend it’s not happening. Or I dig harder and harder to save myself. Or I just simply give up and despair. Do you do the same? How foolish.

Learn from the worms. When storms hit, where can you find refuge? In church. More than that: In whom we hear about at church: Jesus Christ our Savior. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea” (Psalm 46:1-2). You have a refuge in the storms of life: Jesus!

Jesus endured the storm of God’s punishment on the cross for our sins, so that we can have forgiveness and peace. No matter what storms you are facing today, there is strength and help in Jesus. When storms come, find your way to Jesus!
