Sleep in Peace

Lying awake at night is the worst, isn’t it? It usually means there’s something wrong. You’re anxious about a big decision. You worry that someone might find out about your sin. You can’t imagine how you can complete tomorrow’s to-do list. So you lie awake.
You don’t have to. In the Bible, King David learned to say, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8). David learned to sleep in peace.
That’s remarkable, considering all the reasons David had to lie awake at night. He spent years of his life fleeing from evil King Saul. He carried the guilt of his sins of adultery and murder. He had many failures as a parent. His own son Absalom rebelled against him. David had lots of reasons to lie awake.
But he had one greater reason to sleep in peace: “For you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.” The Lord was with him! His guilt was washed away by God’s forgiveness. His life was safe in God’s hands. His future didn’t depend on him. It depended on God’s perfect plan. What could David do? Sleep in peace.
So can you! Whatever guilt weighs down your heart, Jesus has forgiven you! Whatever worries you have about your future are really in God’s hands. All the “to-dos” of life don’t depend on your strength. They depend on Jesus, and he is always faithful. Tonight, you can sleep in peace!
