Saying “Grace”

Did you know that U.S. states have official state photographs? In 2002, the legislature of Minnesota made this picture the official state photograph. Taken in 1918, the photo is called “Grace.” It shows a poor man praying before he eats a meager meal of bread and soup. It’s debated whether the big book on the table is a Bible or a dictionary. Either way, despite his humble circumstances, the man knew he had so much to thank God for.

So do you. So do I! I once heard someone say that the solution to discontentment is gratitude. Psalm 118 begins with and repeats the words that many of us use before we eat: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever” (Psalm 118:1). That’s so true! Do you say “grace” before you eat? Before you sleep? What can you give thanks to God for today? From food—so much more than this man had!—to family to the forgiveness of sins through Jesus our Savior. Discontentment wants to rob our joy. May God give us gratitude instead. “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever!”
