Not Forsaken

Forsaken. Do you know what that word means? Left behind. Forgotten. Cast aside. Deserted. Alone.

Do you feel forsaken? Like everyone who has made promises to you has broken them? Like anyone with power to help you has looked you in the eye and turned away? Like the whole world races around you, but nobody pays any attention to you? Like your sins have forever made you dirty?

That’s an awful feeling. Here’s how the Bible long ago describes being forsaken: “The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst” (Isaiah 41:17). Being forsaken is like desperately seeking water for your parched tongue but not finding any. Does that sound familiar?

Then know this: You are not forsaken! It might feel that way. It might look that way. But you are not forsaken. Here’s how that same verse finishes: “But I the LORD will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.” God sees. God knows. God does not forsake his people!

How can you be sure? Look at the cross of Jesus. Jesus paid for all your sins. Jesus received the rejection that we all deserve. In fact, as Jesus suffered on the cross, he cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). Jesus was forsaken for your sins, so that God will not forsake you.

You’re forgiven, not forsaken. You’re loved, not forgotten. Because of Jesus, God will not forsake you!
