New Mercies Every Morning

How often does the sun come up? Every morning. Some days it’s cloudy. Some days it’s raining. Some winter days the sun comes up late. But how often does the sun come up? Every single morning.


God wants you to take note of that, because that’s how faithful he is. Actually, that’s how faithful God’s mercy and compassion are. In one of the lowest points of the Old Testament, in the middle of a heart-breaking book of lamentations for God’s judgment on the sinful people of Jerusalem, we hear, “Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23). God gives new mercies every morning.


If we ever show mercy to other people, it’s always a limited amount. Our mercy quickly ends. But not God’s. As faithfully as the sun rises, God’s mercies are new every morning. Whatever sins you committed yesterday are washed with Jesus’ blood. Whatever guilt you’ve carried for months or years has been forgiven at Jesus’ cross. As surely as the sun rises, God’s mercies are new every morning.


That means there’s hope for you today. There’s hope today in Jesus! Even if your city is destroyed, like it was for the people of Jerusalem, even if your strength is gone, even if everyone else has run out of patience with you, God hasn’t. When you see the sun rise, remember: There are new mercies every morning.
