In the early 1900s, an American businessman collected a fortune worth hundreds of billions of dollars in today’s money. Would you like that? I bet with a few hundred billion dollars, you could finally be content, right? Well, that businessman was asked by a journalist, “How much do you need to be content?” Know how he responded? “Just a little bit more.” How often do we think that? “I need just a little bit more…” What’s the result? Discontentment. Discouragement. Take to heart this warning from wealthy King Solomon: “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 5:10).
If you love money, you will never have money enough. Even worse, you will never be satisfied. Because money and possessions can never fill the Jesus-sized hole in your heart. We need so much more! We need our hearts and lives to be filled with a Savior who forgives us and loves us every single day. So here’s Solomon’s encouragement: “When God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart” (Ecclesiastes 5:19-20). Did you catch where “gladness of heart” comes from? God! If you run after money, you will never have money enough. When we put our trust in God, we find gladness of heart.
