My Cup Overflows

Is the cup half-full or half-empty? People ask that question to gauge your perspective on life. The assumption is that the cup of life is filled about halfway. When you see a cup filled halfway, do you consider that cup to be half-full or half-empty?

It all depends on the day, doesn’t it? Some days, you are content and thankful. When you think about your life, it’s pretty good. Half-full! Other days, you are sad and discouraged. When you look at your life, it looks barren and bad. Half-empty!

So which perspective is best for a Christian to have? Neither! When you’re a Christian, life isn’t half-full or half-empty. What is it? In Psalm 23, David says, “My cup overflows” (Psalm 23:5).

Do you notice the difference? God hasn’t just filled up our cups halfway. He hasn’t just given us a mediocre amount of grace and blessings. Instead, God pours his grace on us abundantly. He fills our cup to the top, and then he keeps on pouring so that it overflows and runs down the sides.

Think of God’s blessings to you: God made you. Every part of your body is a gift from him. Then God saved you. Jesus died on the cross to forgive your sins and give you eternal life. Every day, God gives us food and clothes and family and friends and pastors and churches and heat and air conditioning…

Is the cup half-full or half-empty? Learn to say with David, “My cup overflows!
