Welcome back to school! It’s the first day of school at our Lutheran elementary school. Unfortunately, I have some bad news. Do you know what King Solomon—the wisest person who ever lived—had to say about wisdom and knowledge? “For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief” (Ecclesiastes 1:18). It’s ironic, but that’s how it works in our sinful world. The more you know, the more sorrow you have. Isn’t that true? The more you learn about our sinful world, the more you examine your own heart, the more sin you see. It’s sad but true: More wisdom = more sorrow.
That’s why our children—and you and I—don’t just need math and reading and science and history. The solution to the world’s problems isn’t better education. It’s not more knowledge. We need so much more. We need a Savior! We need the one kind of wisdom that brings true joy and peace: The knowledge of what Jesus our Savior has done to save us. Today I’m thankful for Christian education. I’m thankful for Christian teachers who teach our children—and us!—about the wonderful knowledge of God’s Word that makes us wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Happy first day of school!
