Jesus Has Overcome

More bad news every day… Hundreds more are died. Thousands more are sick. In my state, the rest of us are strongly encouraged to not even leave our houses. When is it going to end? Have you found yourself thinking that? When will the fear and danger pass? When we will feel safe again? When are all the problems going to go away?

They won’t. It isn’t going to end. At least, not in this sinful world. Sure, the coronavirus will eventually run its course, but the problems of life on earth aren’t going to end. As Jesus prepared to suffer and die for our sins, he told his disciples, “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33). Was he right? While politicians and false preachers constantly preach happy thoughts about peace on earth, God’s promise is that the troubles of life aren’t going to end until you and I leave this sinful world and get to heaven. God wants us to be realistic: “In this world you will have trouble. So what hope do we have? What comfort can we find when a hidden virus spreads around the world? Here’s Jesus’ full statement: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Where can we find peace? “In me” – only in Jesus! It’s in him that our hope is placed. It’s only in Jesus where we find the love and forgiveness and strength that are missing in the world around us. God wants you to be aware of what our earth really is like so that you turn from the things of this world and find your peace in Jesus. Because the real struggle is already over. Your Savior says, “Take heart! I have overcome the world.” God lifts us up, like an eagle soaring in the sky, and let’s us see that what we around us doesn’t tell the whole story. Even though sin seems to reign on earth, Jesus already won when he died for sin on the cross. Even though death is around every corner, Jesus overcame death when he rose from the dead. When more bad news comes every day, hear Jesus’ words and share them with those you love: “In me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
