I Lack Nothing

Writer: Pastor Nathan NassPastor Nathan Nass

What’s on your list? What things do you feel that you want—that you really need!—to be content? I’ve got my list: “I just need…” The ironic thing is that every time I get one of those things, something else takes its place. I’m never really full. I’m never filled. “I just need…” Then, “I just need…” Life becomes a never-ending chase after all the things I feel I need. How foolish! There is no end to the wants.

Unless you know Jesus. King David wrote, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1). Those are powerful words: “I lack nothing.” In the Bible, we see lots of things David lacked. He lacked peace in his family. He lacked a calm childhood. He lacked a perfect marriage. Instead, he had lots of sins and disappointments. But he also had the Lord. He tasted God’s forgiveness. He trusted God’s promises. He knew that God was with him. He had a Good Shepherd who was willing to lay down his life for his sheep.

When you know Jesus, do you know what you can say? “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”
