How Old Are You?

How old are you? Many of us are not eager to say, right? Talking about our age—especially when we get out of our teens and 20s—is a reminder of how fleeting life is. Of the regrets we have about the past. Of the fears we have about the future. Of how powerless we are to stop the inevitable decline of our bodies until death. How old are you? That’s probably not a question you like to think about.

So here’s something surprising: Jesus was very happy to talk about his age. Did you know that? Here’s how old Jesus is: “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born, I am!” Do you know when Abraham lived? About 2000 B.C.—about 2000 years before Jesus was born. Yet, how old was Jesus? “Before Abraham was born, I am!” Jesus was making a powerful claim: He is God! The Jewish leaders understood what Jesus was saying. So they picked up stones to stone him for blasphemy.

But Jesus was telling the truth. He is from everlasting to everlasting. He is eternal. There has never been a day when there wasn’t Jesus. There will never be a day when there won’t be Jesus. He is the Beginning and the End. And here’s what’s amazing: He promises to give that eternal life to you and to every person who believes in him. When Jesus is your Savior, you don’t have to worry about growing older. You don’t have to fear the end of life. Because there will never be a day without Jesus, even in heaven!
