God > Money

No one can serve two masters,” Jesus says. That makes sense. You can’t root for both teams in the Super Bowl. You can’t be committed to two women or two men at the same time. “No one can serve two masters.” So why do we try? We want to love God and ______. You fill in the blank. God and sports. God and the cabin. God and family. God and my political views. God and money. Jesus says that’s impossible. “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24). What matters most to you? What’s driving your decisions? Be honest. Who is your master in your life?

Remember this: God is the only Master in life who came to live and die for you. No earthly possession can ever take away your sins like Jesus has done. No amount of money can possibly give you eternal life like Jesus has done. Buying that next thing will never fill your heart with peace and hope like Jesus does. Money makes a terrible master. Money is never content, always wanting more. Not Jesus. He gave up everything for you. He became poor so that you could become rich—rich in forgiveness, rich in grace, rich in hope, rich in life. You can’t serve two masters. Why would we want to? God > Money.
