God Is King

“Who’s in control of this mess?” Do you ever wonder that as you look around the world? It sure looks like it’s out of control, doesn’t it? It looks like all the wrong people are in all the wrong places. It seems like our lives depend on the whims and fancies of a few powerful people who don’t care about us.

But that’s not the case. You know who really is in charge, right? God! The Bible proclaims, “The Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people” (Daniel 4:17). Who really reigns over all the kingdoms on earth? God does!

That doesn’t mean that it all makes sense to us. That doesn’t mean that every ruler is a godly person. That certainly doesn’t mean that everything the government does is okay. 

What it means is that behind what we see, our God is always at work. He’s using every ruler and every kingdom to carry out his good plan for his people. He even has a tendency to put the “lowliest of people” in unexpected positions, so that we learn not to trust in people but to trust in God.

You can take a deep breath. You can push the anxiety away. The same God who died for you on the cross is reigning over all the kingdoms on earth.

Who’s in control of this mess? Our God is King!
