Giving Advice to God

I like to give advice to God. I bet you do too. It comes so naturally. “God, you really need to…” “God, it’s time you punish…” “God, the world would be so much better if…” Doesn’t God need our help?

No! In fact, the last thing God wants is for us to arrogantly think we could do a better job of ruling the world than he’s doing. Here are his words to the Israelites long ago who insisted on giving advice to God: “Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’” (Isaiah 45:9).

Those words are meant to humble us. Compared to the Almighty God, we are nothing but clay pots. Actually, we’re “potsherds”—smashed clay pots. What clay pot has a right to tell its potter what to make? Not a single one. God doesn’t need our advice.

What God looks for is faith. “God, make me into what you want me to be.” “God, use me in whatever way you want to bring glory to you.” “God, guide me and my life according to your plans.” “God, may your will be done.”

When you do that, do you know what you’ll find? Peace. Don’t worry about giving God advice. In fact, don’t worry at all. The Almighty God who sent his Son for you already has the perfect plan for you.
