Christmas: An Undeserved Blessing

Writer: Pastor Nathan NassPastor Nathan Nass

King David is one of my favorite people in the Bible. There are lots of well-known Bible stories that include this great king. After God made David king, God sent David a special message in which he promised David that his descendants would be the kings of Israel forever. God especially had in mind David’s descendant: the great King Jesus. How did David respond to this great blessing? He sat down in prayer and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?” (1 Chronicles 17:16) Those are words that come to my mind when I think of Christmas: “Who am I, and what is my family, that my God allows me and my family to celebrate the birth of his Son Jesus?” I see many people for whom Christmas seems to be a time for presents and parties and busyness and the emptiness of Santa Claus. I watch the news and see entire nations and religions that have rejected Jesus and try to kill those who believe in him. I live in a country which seems to have progressed too far to have any need for a Savior—or even for a God. But yet, in the midst of all of that, for some reason God in his grace allows me and my little family to celebrate the birth of Jesus our Savior. What a blessing! God gave me parents and pastors and teachers who taught me about the real meaning of Christmas. God has put faith in Jesus in my heart, and my wife’s heart, and my children’s hearts, so that we are blessed to understand and believe and celebrate the birth of Jesus our Savior. I can’t explain why God has done all that for me. All I can say is, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?” What greater blessing is there than to know and celebrate the real reason for Christmas? God’s done the same for you. Of all the people in the world, God in his love and mercy allows you to believe in Jesus and celebrate his birth. What a wonderful, undeserved blessing! May God fill you with humble joy at the great blessing it is to celebrate with believing hearts the birth of our Savior Jesus.
