“I bet you can’t eat just one.” Sound like you? Lay’s potato chips know us pretty well, don’t they? It’s hard to eat just one. That lack of self-control affects so much more than potato chips. It’s hard to drink just one. It’s hard to not watch. It’s hard to wait for marriage. It’s hard not to explode in anger. What problems in your life come from a sinful lack of self-control? The Bible puts it simply: “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control” (Proverbs 25:28). No self-control? No defense.
That’s what makes Jesus’ self-control so amazing. Jesus was “tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). When friends pressured him to get drunk, he didn’t. When the devil encouraged him to take that lustful glance, he didn’t. When the soldiers mockingly told him to get down from the cross, he didn’t. Jesus was perfectly self-controlled, for you. For me. When your walls are broken down, find comfort in Jesus’ forgiveness. Then look to God’s Word for strength. You aren’t a slave to your sinful desires. You are the child of God! With the Spirit’s power, you can eat just one.
